Came across the trailer for the upcoming Act of Valor the other day. I'll ask you to forget the propagandist feel to it and instead focus on its uniquely inspired casting methods. The trailer notes that "the characters in this film are portrayed by active duty U.S. Navy Seals" and that "the story is fictional but the weapons and tactics are real" and "based on actual U.S. Navy Seal missions." I find this fascinating for a number of reasons (soldier exploitation, artificiality in the cinema's depiction of war, action film vs action documentary) and thought it was worth passing along. Again, I cannot judge the film's content until its released in 2012, but the production choices have me interested. It's reminiscent of the casting of Harold Russell in William Wyler's The Best Years of Our Lives, another film I must sadly admit I have yet to see. Thus, this will be a good double feature for me come the new year. Trailer for Act of Valor below:
Any interest? Yay? Nay?
