Some short theater reviews for you all this time around as I reflect on my recent trips Off-Broadway.
The Total Bent: Not Recommended
Edward Albee's The Lady From Dubuque: Recommended
Carrie: The Musical: Not Recommended
So there you go. A mixed bag as of late with some of the theater offerings I've had thrown my way. The Total Bent and Carrie (both musicals) feature some very good music that deserve to be in better crafted, tighter directed shows (TTB goes on for far too long while hinting at cliched pathos, and Carrie relies on lazy digital projections and an anti-bullying message that screams "we're desperate to be appear relevantly hip"), whereas The Lady From Dubuque is typical Albee wackiness, thoughtful and reaching, intelligent and absurd. If there's any commendation for all three of these productions, perhaps it's that it took guts to mount these works in the hopes of finding a willing audience. They're each flawed in different ways, but I must say I'm happy to have crossed their paths.
